Update Players from USCF or FIDE Site

Menu: Internet > Update players from USCF or FIDE site

This command updates player ratings and related data by looking up each registered player online. It is the online equivalent of Update Players from Database, using live federation data instead of a local database file.

Which online service is queried depends on the active database profile’s primary federation, set in Database Setup (the Database Wizard):

  • A USCF profile refreshes from the USCF online service.
  • A CFC profile refreshes from the CFC online service.
  • A FIDE profile (or choosing FIDE as the search federation) refreshes from the FIDE online service.

Despite the menu caption naming only USCF and FIDE, a CFC-based profile is refreshed from the CFC online service automatically; you do not pick CFC anywhere on this command.

Prerequisites

  • The active database profile must have a primary federation of USCF, CFC, or FIDE (not N/A). Configure this in Database Setup. Related online search settings live on the Ratings Tab.
  • An active internet connection is required.

How to Use

Open the command

Go to Internet > Update players from USCF or FIDE site.

Confirm the rating search options (if prompted)

If you have not recently confirmed your rating search options, the Confirm/edit rating search options dialog appears first. Here you set the rating source, supplement date mode, and (for a USCF or CFC profile that also has FIDE data) the joint-refresh option:

OptionEffect
Also fetch FIDE data when refreshing USCF onlineWhen checked, a USCF or CFC online refresh also returns each player’s FIDE rating, title, and federation in the same lookup, so you do not need a separate FIDE pass.

The Also fetch FIDE data when refreshing USCF online checkbox is enabled only when the active rating profile includes FIDE — that is, when the USCF + FIDE or CFC + FIDE chip is selected in the Rating setup panel. When the profile is USCF-only or CFC-only, the checkbox is disabled.

Configure update options

The Update options dialog appears. The header shows the current section and a summary of your rating configuration. Use the Rating Settings… button to reopen the rating search options if you need to change them, then check which data fields to update in the Data to update group:

Update options dialog for online player update

Choose section scope and start

To update only the current section, leave Update all sections unchecked and click OK. To update every section in the tournament, check Update all sections and click OK. When updating all sections, the Pause after each section checkbox controls the workflow. When checked (the default), SwissSys pauses after each section so you can review results before continuing. When unchecked, all sections are processed in batch and a single combined summary is shown at the end.

Review changes

SwissSys searches for each player online. If a player’s data differs from what is in the tournament, a confirmation prompt appears:

  • Skip - Leave this player unchanged
  • Update - Accept changes for this player
  • Update all - Accept all remaining changes without further prompts
  • Cancel - Abort the entire operation

View results

When complete, a results dialog shows two lists: Updated players (left) and Players not found (right). Click OK to close.

Performance

Each player requires a separate online lookup. Individual lookups take a few seconds. Large tournaments may take several minutes. You can interrupt the process at any time by clicking Cancel in the confirmation prompt.

Dialog Reuse

If you have recently confirmed your rating search options, SwissSys skips the Confirm/edit rating search options dialog and reuses your previous settings, opening the Update options dialog directly. To change those settings on the spot, click Rating Settings… in the Update options dialog, or configure them in advance from the Ratings Tab.
