Print Preview - File Menu

Print Preview opens the Preview window, an on-screen, page-by-page view of the chart that is currently displayed (standings, wall chart, pair chart, team standings, alphabetical pairings, or a round-robin grid). From the toolbar at the top of the window you can page through the printout, change how the data is sized to fit the paper, adjust fonts and margins, pick a printer, and then print or save a PDF without leaving the window.

The Preview window toolbar with page navigation, Smart, Fit, zoom, orientation, Page Setup, Fonts, G/C/T toggles, Print Settings, OK, Cancel, PDF, and the Print button, above a sample chart

The preview toolbar

The toolbar runs across the top of the Preview window, left to right.

ControlWhat it does
Previous / Next pageStep through the pages of the printout. The label between them reads Page X of Y.
SmartToggles Smart Printing. When on, SwissSys auto-fits the content to the page and may switch orientation for you. When off, the magnification you set by hand is used as-is.
Fit:A page-count target. Choose Auto (no override) or 1 page through 5 pages. SwissSys sizes the content to land on that many pages. Choosing a fit target turns Smart Printing off so the chosen size carries through to the printout.
- / +Zoom out and zoom in by 0.1. The label between them shows the current magnification (for example 1.0x).
OrientationToggles between Portrait and Landscape. The button caption shows the current orientation.
Page Setup…Opens the Page Setup dialog to set page margins. See Page Setup.
Fonts…Opens the All Fonts dialog so you can change the fonts used in the chart.
G / C / TQuick toggles for grid lines, horizontal cell centering, and the printed timestamp.
Print Settings…Opens the Windows printer dialog so you can choose the printer, duplex, and similar options. The choices here apply to the Print button.
OKSaves your current settings and closes the window without printing.
CancelDiscards the changes you made in the window and closes it (see below).
PDF…Saves the printout as a PDF file.
PrintThe blue button at the far right prints immediately to the selected printer.

Print Preview is described in more depth, including its WYSIWYG limits and font tips, on the Preview page in the Reporting section. That page is the canonical reference for the preview window itself.

Smart Printing and Fit-to-Pages

Two controls govern how the chart is sized for paper:

  • Smart Printing lets SwissSys choose the magnification (and, if needed, the orientation) automatically so the content fits cleanly. This is the usual default for most charts.
  • Fit-to-Pages lets you instead demand a specific number of pages. Pick a target from the Fit: list and SwissSys sizes the content to fit that many pages. Selecting a fit target turns Smart Printing off so the resulting size is used verbatim when you print or save a PDF. Returning Fit: to Auto restores your previous Smart Printing choice.

Manual zoom (the - / + buttons, or the + / - keys) overrides both: zooming by hand drops the Fit: target back to Auto.

Closing the window: Print, PDF, OK, and Cancel

The exit buttons differ in what they keep:

  • Print and PDF… carry the settings you adjusted in the window through to the job, and those settings stay applied afterward.
  • OK saves your settings without printing, so any font, margin, or sizing tweaks remain in effect.
  • Cancel (and the title-bar close, Alt+F4, or Esc) restores the state the chart was in before you opened the preview. Anything you changed in the window — zoom, orientation, fonts, margins, Smart or Fit settings — is rolled back.

For fixed-roster sections, printing directly from the preview is not allowed. SwissSys will ask you to print from the pair chart dialog instead.
