Step 14 - Multi-section Tournaments

Now you are ready to try a slightly more complicated example involving more than one section at a time.

Section Panels

The easiest way to keep track of multiple sections is to use the section panels, which SwissSys creates automatically when you use the Tournament Setup dialog. Each section gets its own panel; clicking a panel switches to that section.

Let’s open a pre-built two-section tournament. In your SwissSys “Events” folder, open the file Demo1.sjson. This file has two sections — Invitational and Booster — already set up through three rounds, so you don’t need to register players or enter results from scratch.

Two section panels should appear at the bottom of the main window. A highlighted panel means that section is active. Click on “Invitational” to activate it.

Notice that the Section Box in the upper right of the main window also lists both sections. Selecting from that list is another way to switch sections.

Registering a Player in a Specific Section

You can register a player in any section either by:

  • Clicking the section panel first, then opening the registration dialog, or
  • Opening the registration dialog directly and selecting the section from the section box near the top

The second method is usually more convenient when registering players across multiple sections at once. Let’s try it now.

Click the pencil toolbar button to open the registration dialog. Enter:

  • Name: Karpov, Anatoly
  • ID: any number
  • Rating: 2690

In the section box just above the name field, select Booster as his section, then click Accept.

You’ll see a warning that the rating is out of bounds for that section — this is a configurable option in the section setup dialog. Ignore it for now, then click Exit to return to the main view. Notice that Booster is now the highlighted section.

Moving a Player Between Sections

SwissSys lets you drag players from one section to another using the player roster.

Click the player roster button if the roster isn’t already visible. Suppose Karpov decides he’d rather play in the Invitational section. Find his name in the roster, then click and drag it to the Invitational section panel. When prompted, confirm this as a move (not a duplication).

Running Multiple Sections

From here, running a multi-section tournament works the same as a single-section tournament — you just need to activate the right section first. Click a section panel or use the Section Box to switch, then use the standard SwissSys commands (pair, enter results, print) as usual.

Many common operations — pairing, printing, exporting — can be done in a batch across all sections when SwissSys offers that option.

This is a basic introduction to running bigger tournaments with SwissSys.
