Merged Tournaments
A merged tournament is one in which players are allowed to play on different schedules at first, with the various schedules all coming together in the later rounds. Players are allowed to withdraw from one schedule after a bad start and re-enter on the faster schedule.
How Merged Tournaments Work
Initial Phases
- Players begin on different time schedules (for example, one-day vs. two-day schedules)
- Each schedule operates independently with separate pairings
- Players complete different numbers of rounds based on their chosen schedule
Merger Point
- At a predetermined round, all schedules converge
- Players from different schedules are combined into a single section
- Subsequent rounds include all players regardless of their original schedule
Schedule Switching
Players have the flexibility to:
- Withdraw from their current schedule if performing poorly
- Re-enter on a different (typically faster) schedule
- Continue with their results carrying forward to the merged section
Reporting Considerations
When generating reports for merged tournaments:
- Early round reports show separate schedule standings
- Post-merger reports combine all players
- Player histories reflect their complete tournament path
- Pairing reports account for the schedule transition
This format is popular for weekend tournaments where players may have different time commitments or preferences for game scheduling.
