Team Results or Individual Results?

In fixed-roster events you have the choice of entering results on the pair chart either in team-based mode or individual mode. Which you choose depends on how you run your tournaments and what information is important to you. (You can toggle between the two modes using the Ctrl-T shortcut.)

Team-based mode

If you don’t care about the individual results, entering results in team-based mode is easier, because you have fewer results to enter and you may not know the exact results on each board anyway.

Individual mode

If individual results do matter to you, however, you will find it best to enter results in individual mode (player against player) rather than in team-based mode.

This is because when you give results to teams instead of to players, SwissSys has no way of knowing what the individual results were, and will simply assign individual results at random based on the team results you give it.

This may or may not be what actually happened in the games.

By entering results on a player-by-player basis SwissSys gets both the individual results you enter, and the team results, which it then automatically calculates from these individual results.

Switching modes

If you are in team-based mode when you exit the pair chart dialog, you will receive a prompt asking you if it is OK to farm out approximate individual results based on the team results shown.

If you want to leave the individual results alone, answer No to this prompt.

In general, answer Yes to this prompt unless you have already entered results in individual mode and don’t want those results to be altered.

Answering No will leave individuals with the results you previously entered for them for that round, or leave them blank if you have not entered any yet.

Reconciling approaches

SwissSys does its best to reconcile the two approaches, and there is an option to keep a team’s game wins in sync with the individual results reported.

This option is in the Environment options dialog. Leaving this option checked ensures that even if you sometimes enter results by team and sometimes by player, the game wins value will always agree with the individual results keyed in.
