Replacement Player List
The replacement player list is a list of available players which you can display from the pair chart for use in adjusting the pairings. In the list will be shown all players who, at the time, are not paired.
To activate this list (or reactivate it if another window hides it), click on the far right toolbar button of the pair chart (marked with an “R”), or select Tools | Show replacement players list from the Pair chart menu.
Once activated, click on a player in the list and drag the name onto the pair chart wherever you want it.
Replacement players can be dropped onto the pair chart either in “replace mode”, in which case the player you drag and drop replaces the one currently in the chart (and the one currently in the chart is moved to the replacement players list), or in one of two “insert modes.” In the latter case the player is dropped onto the chart either before or after the spot where you end the drag operation, and a new board is inserted in the pair chart.
When to use this feature
The replacement player list is best when at least one of the players involved is not already in a normal pairing row.
Typical examples:
- a late registrant should play the current bye player
- two latecomers should be paired against each other
- a no-show should be removed from the chart
- a withdrawn player should be re-entered
- one or both sides of a pairing should be deleted
If both players are already paired and you only want to swap their positions, use the Switch button instead.
If many pairings should change, or if games have not started yet, it is often better to back up and pair the round again instead of stacking manual adjustments.
Replace mode vs. insert mode
Replace mode is usually the right choice when one player should take over an existing spot on the chart.
Examples:
- a late registrant replaces a bye
- a new player replaces a no-show
- you delete one player so the opponent becomes a bye
Insert mode is for creating a new board before or after an existing row.
Examples:
- two previously unpaired players should now play each other
- you want to insert a new matchup without disturbing the current row first
Insert mode works from the left side of the chart. If you try to insert from the right side, SwissSys may prompt you to switch to replace mode, insert on the left side, cancel, or use the next board down.
To delete a player from the chart, select the player (which leaves the result box for that player highlighted), and then click the “Delete player” button on the player roster.
To delete an entire pairing, select either player and click on the “Delete pairing” button.
At the top of the replacement player list there will always appear two lines: Delete player and Delete whole matchup. You can also drag these items onto the pair chart to scratch a player or a pair of players from the chart.
You may include or exclude withdrawn players from the list by checking the corresponding box at the top of the list.
If you drag a withdrawn player back into the chart, SwissSys will prompt you to re-enter that player.
Important cautions
- This is a current-round manual adjustment tool. If players in a past round actually faced the wrong opponents, use the Results Editor or back up and redo the pairings from before that round.
- After creating or deleting matchups, you may want to use Tools | Renumber boards so the board list is clean again.
- In fixed-roster team events, large team-level changes are safer from the team-based pair chart than from the individual player view.
- In double-blitz style events, a manual drag-and-drop change to one game does not necessarily mean SwissSys can mirror the same change automatically in the paired even-numbered game.
