Registration & Editing Tab - Environment Options
The Registration & Editing tab controls settings related to player registration and result editing behavior.
Registration Settings
Auto-sort players by rating
Automatically assigns pair numbers to players based on their ratings, keeping the roster sorted by strength.
Default: Checked (turned on)
Impact:
- When ON (recommended): Players automatically receive pair numbers reflecting their rating order
- When OFF: Players are appended to the roster sequentially as registered
When to disable: Only turn this off if you need manual control over pair number assignments.
Recovery: From the main window, click on Players → Resort all by rating to restore proper order if disabled.
In FIDE mode, this setting is ignored after round 4, at which point FIDE does not allow pair numbers to change.
Randomize order for equally rated
Controls how SwissSys handles players with identical ratings when assigning pair numbers.
Default: Checked (turned on)
Impact:
- When ON (recommended): Randomly sorts players with equal ratings (fairest approach)
- When OFF: First-come-first-served order
Note: Alternate ratings can be used to break ties between equally-rated players.
If you are using FIDE pairing rules, these rules require a specific order based on rating, title, then alphabetically by name. In this case using FIDE rules will override this setting.
Warn if expired
Displays a warning when registering players with expired federation memberships. Keep this enabled to ensure all participants have current memberships before play begins.
Default: Checked (turned on)
Limit ID numbers to 8 digits
Restricts ID number entry to 8 digits, blocking longer IDs used by FIDE and some federations.
Default: Not Checked (turned off)
When to enable: Enable if you exclusively run USCF events to prevent typos when entering 8-digit USCF IDs.
When to disable: Disable for FIDE events or tournaments accepting international players with longer ID numbers.
USCF IDs are exactly 8 digits. Enabling this setting acts as a safeguard against data entry errors.
No warning as long as rating is in range for section
Suppresses section eligibility warnings when a player’s rating falls within the current section’s limits.
Default: Not Checked (turned off)
When to enable: Multi-section tournaments with clear rating boundaries.
How it works:
- You define rating limits for each section (e.g., Open: 2000+, Reserve: 1600-1999)
- Players are automatically directed to appropriate sections based on rating
- Warnings appear only if the player is ineligible for the current section
No warning as long as age/grade is in range
Works like the rating-based rule above, but uses the age/grade field instead of ratings.
Default: Not Checked (turned off)
When to enable: Scholastic tournaments with age-based or grade-based sections.
Power user mode (fewer prompts)
Reduces informational prompts, confirmations, and warnings throughout the application.
Default: Not Checked (turned off)
Impact: Fewer confirmation dialogs and warning messages during common operations.
When to enable: Experienced tournament directors who want a streamlined workflow.
Editing Settings
Synch fixed-roster game points
Controls how team game points are calculated in fixed-roster team events.
Default: Checked (turned on)
Impact:
- When ON: SwissSys automatically calculates team game wins from individual player results
- When OFF: Team game wins remain as manually entered
When to enable: Fixed-roster team tournaments where you want automatic calculation of team game wins.
Use case: Ensures team scores stay synchronized with individual game results.
Network mode
Enables network mode for multi-station player registration.
Default: Not Checked (turned off)
When to enable: When using multiple registration stations that need to share player data.
How it works: SwissSys automatically saves registered players to a special network database for importation by other stations.
Learn more: See Network Mode for complete setup instructions and workflow details.
Post-Event Ratings
Configure settings for calculating post-tournament rating changes.
Formula for post-event ratings
Selects the rating calculation formula for post-tournament rating updates.
Default: USCF
When to change: Only if using alternative rating systems or special tournament formats.
Available formulas:
| Formula | Description | Use For |
|---|---|---|
| USCF | Current United States Chess Federation formula | USCF-rated tournaments (default) |
| Old USCF | Legacy USCF rating system (pre-2015) | Historical compatibility |
| FIDE | International Chess Federation formula | FIDE-rated tournaments |
| Canada | Chess Federation of Canada formula | CFC-rated tournaments |
| Custom Canada | Customized Canadian rating calculation | Special Canadian events |
| Mexico | Mexican Chess Federation formula | Mexican tournaments |
| British Chess Federation | English Chess Federation formula | ECF-rated tournaments |
| Scholastic | Age-appropriate rating system for youth tournaments | Scholastic tournaments |
| Chess’n Math | Chess’n Math Association formula | Chess’n Math rated events |
When to change: Select the formula that matches your tournament’s official rating system before calculating post-event ratings.
For detailed information about each formula’s calculation method, see Post-Event Rating Formulas.
K-value
Controls the weighting factor for rating changes calculated by SwissSys.
Range: Typically 0.5 to 2.0
Default: 1.0
Impact:
- Higher K-values (e.g., 1.5, 2.0) cause larger rating swings per game
- Lower K-values (e.g., 0.5, 0.8) produce smaller, more gradual rating changes
- K-value of 1.0 applies the rating formula without modification
When to change: Most tournaments should use the default 1.0. Adjust only if your rating system requires special weighting.
Changing the K-value affects the magnitude of all rating changes. Consult your federation’s rating guidelines before modifying this setting.
Scholastic rating setup
Configures point awards for the scholastic rating system.
When to use: Click this button to configure age-appropriate point awards and rating calculation parameters for scholastic tournaments.
Learn more: See Scholastic Rating Setup for detailed configuration instructions.
