Finding Tournaments

Browse upcoming chess tournaments at chessroster.com/tournaments . You can search, filter, and switch between a visual card view and a compact table.

Card and Table Views

The default card view groups matching events by time and highlights the tournament name, date, venue, organizer, sections, fee, and registration availability. Use Load more when more matching events are available.

Switch to table view when you want a denser list or sortable columns. Each tournament row can include:

Use the Columns button in the toolbar to show or hide columns.

The card layout is designed for both desktop and mobile. Your view and filters are reflected in the page URL, so a filtered result can be bookmarked or shared.

Filtering Tournaments

Use the search field and Filters controls above the results to narrow the list:

  • Location — Use your saved profile location, enter another location, or allow your device to provide its position. ChessRoster starts with nearby results and can widen the search through 50, 100, 200, and 500 miles.
  • Search radius — Choose 50, 100, 200, or 500 miles, or Any distance. If a radius is hiding other matches, Show all removes it.
  • Status — Choose Upcoming, In Progress, or Completed. The Completed option shows how many completed events match when that count is available.
  • Organizer — Filter by specific tournament organizer.
  • Search — Match tournament names, organizers, venues, and locations.

Location permission is optional. You can type a location instead, and a ZIP code saved on your profile can be used as your starting point.

Completed events stay out of the normal discovery results unless you select Completed or follow the Show completed tournaments link. This keeps the default list focused on events you can still attend.

Organizer Tools

If you manage tournaments, select Organizer tools on the tournament-list page to open the organizer management area. This shortcut does not change the results other players see.

What to Check Before Registering

Before clicking Register, review these on the tournament’s detail page:

  • Sections — Confirm you are eligible for a section (rating limits, available spots).
  • Info — Check the registration deadline, venue, and entry fee.
  • Roster — See who has already signed up.

A register icon appears directly on the list row for tournaments with open online registration.
