Club Memberships
Many chess clubs and organizers on ChessRoster offer memberships — a recurring subscription that unlocks member benefits, most commonly discounted tournament entry. This guide covers how to subscribe, manage your subscription, and how membership saves you money when you register for events.
First time? A membership is optional. You can register for most tournaments without one. Memberships are a way for a specific club or organizer to give their members a discount or special access — they are separate from a USCF (US Chess Federation) membership.
What a Membership Is
A membership ties you to one organizer (a chess club or tournament organizer). Each membership has:
- A tier — the membership product, such as “Club Member” or “Junior Member.”
- A billing plan — how often you are charged. A tier can offer more than one frequency, and you pick the one you want.
Billing runs through PayPal as a recurring subscription. ChessRoster charges your plan automatically each cycle until you cancel.
Billing frequencies you may see
| Frequency | Billed |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Every month |
| Quarterly | Every 3 months |
| Semi-Annual | Every 6 months |
| Annual | Once per year |
Not every organizer offers all four — you only see the plans that organizer has set up.
Finding an Organizer’s Membership Page
Each organizer that offers memberships has a public membership page on their own subdomain:
https://[organization].chessroster.com/membershipYou can reach it from the organizer’s page, or by following a link the organizer shares. The page shows a card for each available tier with its price and benefits. If the organizer has not published any plans yet, you will see a No Membership Plans Available message instead.

Subscribing to a Membership
Choose a tier and plan
On the membership page, find the tier you want. If a tier offers more than one billing frequency, use the selector to switch between Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, or Annual — the price updates to match. The benefits checklist below the price shows what the tier includes.
Click Subscribe
A Confirm Subscription dialog opens with an order summary: the recurring price, the amount due today, and your next billing date. Review it, then click Continue to PayPal.

Sign in if prompted
Subscribing requires a ChessRoster account. If you are not signed in, you are taken to sign in first, then returned to checkout.
Complete your member details
On the Complete Your Subscription page, confirm your First Name and Last Name (required). You can optionally link your USCF ID, FIDE ID, and CFC ID. Some organizers also ask a few custom questions here.
Authorize with PayPal
Use the PayPal button to authorize the recurring billing agreement. When PayPal confirms, your subscription is activated and you land on your membership management page with a success message.
Calendar-aligned plans. Some plans bill on a fixed calendar (for example, everyone renews in January). If you join partway through a cycle, your first payment is prorated — you only pay for the remaining portion of the current period. The order summary shows this as a “Prorated first payment” before you confirm.
Subscription States
Your membership can be in one of several states. You will see the current state as a colored chip on the management page and on your profile.
| State | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending Approval | You authorized PayPal, but the billing agreement is not yet confirmed. |
| Active | Billing normally. You have full member benefits. |
| Suspended | A payment failed. PayPal retries automatically; benefits may pause until it succeeds. |
| Cancelled | You (or the organizer) cancelled. Benefits continue until the end of the current period. |
| Expired | The subscription ended after cancellation or repeated payment failures. |
Managing Your Membership
Open your management page for an organizer at:
https://[organization].chessroster.com/membership/manageYou can also reach it from the Memberships section of your profile — click Manage on any subscription card.
The management page shows one card per membership with:
- The member name, tier, and current status chip
- Price, Member Since, Current Period, and Next Billing Date (shown as Active Until once cancelled)
- A Payment History panel listing past charges, amounts, and any refunds
- Action buttons for editing details, upgrading, and cancelling

Editing your details
Click Edit Details to update your name, federation IDs, or answers to the organizer’s custom questions.
A membership must stay with the same person. If you change the name, ChessRoster reminds you that memberships cannot be transferred — to set one up for a different person, cancel this membership and purchase a new one for them.
Upgrading to a higher tier
If your subscription is Active and the organizer offers a higher-priced tier, a View Upgrade Options button appears. It takes you back to the membership page where you can subscribe to the higher tier. When you upgrade, ChessRoster prorates the billing so you are only charged for the unused portion of your current cycle.
Adding another member
The Add Another Member link starts a new subscription — useful when you manage memberships for family members. Each person gets their own membership card.
Cancelling a Subscription
Open the management page
Go to the organizer’s membership management page and find the membership you want to cancel.
Click Cancel Subscription
The button is available while your subscription is Active or Suspended. A confirmation dialog opens.
Confirm
You can optionally enter a reason. After you confirm, the status changes to Cancelled.
Cancelling stops future billing, but your membership remains active until the end of the current billing period. You keep your benefits until that date, shown as “Active Until” on the card.
If your subscription expires or you cancel, a Renew button appears on the membership card in your profile so you can resubscribe.
How Membership Saves You Money at Registration
The main payoff of a membership is discounted tournament entry. When an organizer offers a member discount on an event:
- ChessRoster checks for your active membership when you register for that organizer’s tournament.
- If you qualify, a Membership Discount line automatically appears in your fee breakdown at checkout — you do not need to enter a code.
Some organizers require your membership to be valid through the tournament’s end date, not just on the day you register. If your subscription would lapse before the event, you may not get the member price. When in doubt, keep your subscription active through the event, or contact the organizer.
For the full fee breakdown you see at checkout, see Registering for a Tournament.
Troubleshooting
- No Subscribe button / “not set up to accept subscription payments”: The organizer has not finished connecting their PayPal account for subscriptions. Contact the organizer.
- PayPal will not load: Ad-blockers or strict privacy settings can block the PayPal button. Try disabling ad-blockers, use a different browser, or use the Retry option shown on the page.
- Status shows Suspended: A payment failed. PayPal retries automatically — make sure your PayPal funding source is valid. Benefits may pause until billing succeeds.
- Didn’t get the member discount: Confirm your subscription is Active for that organizer, and check whether the organizer requires membership through the event end date.
